Moussaka is an incredibly delicious dish that everyone needs to try! It’s a traditional Greek dish and, despite being popular throughout the world, not many people know how to make it. So if you’ve ever wanted to experience an authentic Moussaka, here’s your chance!
Ingredients
You'll need the following to make a fantastic moussaka:
- Ground beef or lamb (1 pound)
- Medium eggplant (2)
- Eggs (3)
- White onion (2)
- Garlic clove (1)
- Ground cinnamon (1/4 teaspoon)
- Ground allspice (1/2 teaspoon)
- Red wine vinegar (2 tablespoons)
- Canned tomato sauce (15 ounces)
- Ground black pepper
- Cottage cheese (15 ounces)
- Heavy cream (1 cup)
- Mozzarella cheese (2 ounces)
- Grated parmesan cheese (1/3 cup)
Instructions
Ready to get cooking? Here’s what you need to do:
- Preheat your oven to 375°F.
- Cut the eggplant into 1/4” thick slices and lay them in a single layer on an oiled baking sheet. Drizzle with a little oil and bake for 8 minutes.
- In a large non-stick skillet, cook the ground beef or lamb over medium-high heat, breaking it up with a wooden spoon. Once it’s about halfway cooked, add the onions, garlic and spices and continue cooking for about 10 minutes, until the beef is cooked through.
- Add the red wine vinegar and tomato sauce and stir to combine. Cook for another few minutes and then remove from the heat.
- In a separate bowl, whisk together the eggs and cottage cheese. Add the heavy cream and mix until combined.
- Spray a 13x9-inch baking dish with cooking spray and layer half of the eggplant slices on the bottom. Spread the beef mixture over the eggplant and layer the remaining eggplant slices on top.
- Pour the egg-cottage cheese mixture over the top, spreading it evenly. Top with the mozzarella and parmesan. Bake for 25 minutes, or until everything is hot and bubbly.
- Serve warm and enjoy!
